A Knitting Weekend in Ludington

Presented by Ludington B & B Association and Nautical Yarn

November 1 - 3, 2024

Ludington Bed & Breakfast Association and Nautical Yarn have created a relaxing weekend getaway that combines knitting, great food and fun times with friends! The talented team at Nautical Yarn will be teaching a master class on socks.  The price of the weekend is dependent on the charge for your room at the B & B.  Please register through a B & B listed below.

I.            Class Information

A.                  Meeting dates and times

    • Friday, November 1                5-8:30 PM                   Dinner @ 5:45 PM
    • Saturday, November 2           
      • Morning Class, 9 – Noon
      • Afternoon Class, 1 – 4 PM
      • Evening Reception, 7 – 8:30 PM Cartier Mansion
    • Sunday, November 3              
      • Morning Class 9 – Noon

II.          Friday, November 1              5:00 – 8:30 PM  Dinner at 5:45 PM

  • Intro to Weekend
  • Project – pair of socks knit using yarn of your choice of color, pattern, and weight
    • Yarn
      • Sock Weight    Medium or light colored yarn            400 yds
      • DK weight                                                                   250-375 yds
      • Worsted Weight                                                          200-300 yds
    • b)                  Needles
      • (Please bring 2 circular needles in 24” or 32” length, or one of each)
      • Also, bring one set of DPNs in small size (size 1 – 3)
      • (1)               Sock Weight yarn                                                        Size 1.5 – 3 US
      • (2)               DK Weight yarn                                                           Size 3 – 5 US
      • (3)               Worsted Weight yarn                                                 Size 4 – 6 US
  • Swatches – You will be knitting several swatches using practice yarn in weight of your choice
    • Yarn
      • Sock Weight    Medium or light colored yarn            100 yds
      • DK weight                                                                    50-100 yds
      •  Worsted Weight                                                          50-100 yds
    • Needles (Please bring 2 circular needles in 24” or 32” length, or one of each)
      • Sock Weight                                                                Size 1.5 – 3 US
      • DK weight                                                                    Size 3 – 5 US
      • Worsted Weight                                                          Size 4 – 6 US
  • Project vs Practice SWATCHES
    • Don’t rip out Practice swatches even if mistakes are made
    • Practice Swatches (different yarn and needles than Project Socks)
      • Toe-Up Swatch
      • Top-Down Swatch
      • Sweet Tomato Heel Swatch
      • Kitchener Stitch Bind Off
    • Swatch 1 – Toe Up Method
      • Sock 1 – Cast On 6-8 stitches per needle using Figure Eight or other method
      • Round 1 – Work plain row in st st on each needle
      • Round 2 – Work increase row on each needle
      • Repeat Rounds 1 & 2 until sock reaches specified point on little toe
      • Place work on 2 DPNs as holders

III.        Class Two (Saturday Morning, November 4)

  • Swatch 2 – Toe Up Method
    • Sock 1 – Cast On 6-8 stitches per needle using Figure Eight or other method
    • Round 1 – Work plain row in st st on each needle
    • Round 2 – Work increase row on each needle
    • Mark front of sock
    • Repeat Rounds 1 & 2 until sock reaches specified point on little toe
    • Place work on 2 DPNs as holders
  • Two-At-A-Time Method
    • Two Circular Needles - Assemble
    • Place fronts of socks on Needle A
    • Place backs of socks on Needle B
  • Magic Loop Method
  • Discuss Project Pattern Pattern

V.          Class Three (Saturday Afternoon, November 2)

  • SWEET TOMATO HEEL by Cat Bordhi
    • Swatch 3 – Sweet Tomato Heel
      • Cast On _____ stitches
      • Join and work in round using st st for 4-5 rounds.
      • Sweet Tomato Heel

VI.        Class Four (Sunday Morning, November 3)

  • Top Down Socks
  • Other Heel Methods
  • How to make your socks fit better
  • Swatch 4 – Kitchener Bind off for Toe Up Socks
  • Noon - VIP Shopping (10% off all purchases)

A complete supply list will be sent to attendees a few weeks prior to the event.

Registration for the 2024 B & B Weekend is made through one of the participating B & B establishments.

If you are interested in attending the weekend without participating in a stay at a Ludington B & B, please call Nautical Yarn at 231-845-9868 to be put on a waiting list.  Per our agreement with The Ludington Area Historical B & B Association, as soon as all B & B rooms are full, Nautical Yarn can add others to the weekend if space allows.
